BITE CLUB: FT. Palms Pizzeria, Bobbies Bakehouse and Sooshi Sushi

In this edition, we look at a trio of grab-and-go options that will tingle the taste buds in a variety of different ways… munch on

PALMS PIZZERIA, MARGATE

@palmspizzeria

Taking over Unit 16 at The Centre (which is now filled with ridiculously eclectic and wicked shizz), Palms Pizzeria has burst on to the scene slinging slices of pizza that you’d take home to meet your parents.

Industrially styled and white-tiled, it does exactly what it says on the cartoony logo: Pizza By The Slice, Beer By The Can and Liquor By The Shot. But they do it frickin’ well.

On our visit we took on three different slices (well, you can’t exactly go and just have one, can you!), the margherita, the veggie special and the outrageously good fennel sausage, n’duja, purple broccoli, red onion and chilli oil.

Accessible in all ways, you can have a cheap slice, or you can buy a full 20-inch pizza… and if you turn up on the right day you might get a couple of shots on the house, if you’re nice. Sliced.

SOOSHI SUSHI, WHITSTABLE

@sooshi_sushi

Another one moving into a Unit 16, this time at the South Quay Shed on Whitstable harbour, Sooshi Sushi has been knocking out quality Japanese flava since lockdown.

But with the popularity through the roof, it was time to take a California Roll into a fixed location.

“Are those chopsticks in your pants, or are you just happy sashimi?” says the cheeky wall art in what is a nicely decked-out section of the old shed. Everything is made fresh, and in front of you at times, daily. On our visit we went for a range (you kind of have to), including spicy salmon poke ball, crab poke ball, spicy salmon maki, crab and avocado California roll and a sesame inari. But there’s loads of good stuff to choose from, so look at the Set Boxes to help you out. And there’s even some vegan options, after all “fish are friends, not food”.

Watch out for the little promotions like Miso Monday, where customers get a free mini miso soup with every Classic Box. Pow.

BOBBIES BAKEHOUSE, FOLKESTONE

@bobbiesbakehouse

You can almost hear the murmur of the crowds as you walk along Folkestone Harbour Arm towards Bobbies Bakehouse… “salt beef bagel, salt beef bagel,” they whisper.

Now almost as famous as those tiny houses that float in the harbour (who lives in those anyway?), Bobbies salt beef bagel has a reputation that precedes it. And not being types to divert destiny, of course we went there, and of course we ate exactly that.

Bobbies Bakehouse was opened by husband-and-wife team Alex and John in 2019, turning the old Folkestone Harbour station signal box into a cafe with baked goods to fight for – not surprising given Alex worked as a canapé chef and wedding caterer in Hythe and John plied his trade as a pastry chef in London.

The bagels are homemade, with the beef house-cured for 10 days, served up with a bit of mustard, a bit of mayo and a pickle. Easy as that. We sat in and ate it, but you can get it to go if you’re not as lazy as us. Boom.
