BROADSTAIRS FOLK WEEK RETURNS FOR 59TH YEAR

Line-up announcements begin for 2024 festival

Now in its 59th year, Broadstairs Folk Week returns in the summer with a programme bursting with music, song and dance.

From 9th to 16th August, the stellar line-up includes Oysterband, Le Vent du Nord, Daphne’s Flight, Kathryn Tickell & the Darkening, Jim Moray, Tim Edey, Jim Causley, Richard Digance, Banter, the Monster Ceilidh Band, Alden Patterson, Jez Lowe, Bird in the Belly, Tarren, Harmonia, A J Clarke, Zulu Tradition, Brown Boots Boogie Band, Teilhard Frost, Tin Giants and Wychbury.

Concerts will take place in the Queen’s Road Baptist Centre, while ceilidhs and dances are held at the Sarah Thorne Theatre. Special events include shows by The Folk Detectives, Shantyskeptic, The New Radio Ballads’ In the Footsteps of Ewan MacColl and many more.

Workshops include African guitar, belly dancing, ukulele bands, a festival choir, songwriting, poetry breakfasts, sketching walks, shanties and knitting. There’ll be a Gentle Ceilidh, supported by Chartwell Boutique Care Homes and a fancy-dress sci-fi ceilidh with the wonderful Banter.

Younger folk are well catered for with the free Hobby Horse Club with festival mascots Clarence the Dragon and the Hooden Horses.

The first ceilidh kicks off with the Hilltop Ceilidh Band, while there’s two workshops a day in country dancing and solo clog as well as 130 free pub gigs, a craft and music fair and entertainment at the Bandstand.

The Folk Week campsite has a legendary atmosphere and is a downhill walk to the sea, but there is free transport, too. An all-inclusive ticket with camping is £345 per adult for the whole week.

The Souvenir Programme is published in June and has all the details – £7.50 including postage and packing.
