The Real Eating Company will be taking over the site that EAT recently vacated in Whitefriars Square following their acquisition by Pret. Opening early February the company serves no nonsense, modestly priced, seasonal British food, using local produce whenever they can, all day, every day.

Helena Hudson, Managing Director of the Real Eating Company, said: “We’re a strong, independent café concept that champions local businesses and exciting produce. We believe that Canterbury will be a good home for us, complementing the other cities across the South where we currently operate.”

The company also champions sustainability, utilising 100% plant-based packaging, including a limited edition ‘I LOVE Canterbury’ compostable takeaway coffee cup. Any takeaway coffee ordered before 10 noon is just £2 as part of the company’s Early Bird promotion aimed at local workers and residents.

A number of former EAT employees will be joining the Real Eating Company team, including the manager, Lynda Iddeten.

Taking over the former Kent Reliance unit in Rose Lane is award-winning chocolate brownies franchise, Love Brownies Café, its ninth in the UK.

The Canterbury store, who opened last Thursday, sells a range of fudgy chocolate brownies, with flavours such as salted caramel, double chocolate, morello cherry, orange and raspberry. All brownies are gluten-free, and a range of vegan options are also available. The café also offers coffee, along with a breakfast and lunch menu.

Love Brownies Canterbury’s owner, Dildar Bhangu, said: “We are so excited to have opened our doors and welcome the people of Canterbury to our café.

"Not only do we have the most amazing brownies and a range of delicious treats, but we pride ourselves on our service - so if you’re looking for an experience that’s just that little bit different then we’d love to see you.”

The brand is going from strength to strength, winning Great Taste and Great British Food Awards for its gluten-free salted caramel brownie and a Great British Food Award for its vegan coconut brownie. Love Brownies is open seven days a week.

Whitefriars Marketing Manager Julie Holness says: “We are delighted to welcome these new dining experiences to the award-winning Whitefriars line-up. We’ve always looked to champion independent and local food and drink producers in the centre and we think our customers are going to love these new food outlets.

“Whitefriars continues to prove a popular choice for shoppers across the region. Occupancy level is at an all time high and Christmas trade was fueled by our ever popular Christmas market with this season’s added bonus of a real ice rink. We also bucked the national trend, with a 2.6% year on year increase in footfall in December.”
