Is self-pleasure good for you or is celibacy the new Tinder? Will AI technology be an inevitable checkmate to humanity? Which is the most dangerous conspiracy theory – 5G mind control or Covid-19 bioweapons?

As screens are bombarded and brains polarised by pandemic paranoia, Guerilla Science is helping people find the answers to life’s big questions. By starting an argument.

Guerilla Science is launching a new ‘Sci-Curious’ podcast this monthGuerilla Science Presents.., taking you on a deep dive through the spectrum of human experience, and examining opposing views from cross-disciplinary experts and front line thinkers to find answers in the modern world.

The gurus behind internationally-renowned interactive installations and events at some of the UK’s top venues and festivals, Guerilla Science is on a mission to revolutionise how people connect with science through participatory experiences.

Hosts Rebecca Ellis and Rachel William will put scientists, contemporary thinkers and creative minds on opposite sides of the mic every month to share their views and opinions on divisive topics of debate. Each episode tackles one polarising subject.

Rachel Williams is a PhD researcher at King's College London's Centre for Developmental Neurobiology, trying to understand how the brain turns sensory information into behaviour. Rachel is also a freelance Science Communicator, having hosted and produced events for Guerilla Science at venues and music festivals across the UK.

Rebecca Ellis has spent the last 16 years developing businesses in the events and cultural sector, including Dreamland Margate, The O2, The British Music Experience and The De La Warr Pavilion.

She is Co-Director of new consultancy Black Eyes, Rosy Cheeks working strategically with businesses to help them achieve better audience reach through creative activations, and injecting financial stability into organisations of creative excellence. As an experienced Producer and Curator she is also a lecturer in Experience Design at Central St Martins.

Episode 1 launches 19th October and looks at how our sex lives have changed for better or worse during the pandemic, speaking to both sex scientists and sex workers.

Director of Guerilla Science Jen Wong said: “Science doesn’t unilaterally tell you what to think, but enables you to discover the complexity of reality through participation.

“Post lockdown but mid pandemic, we have never been more digitally connected, or more polarised in our opinions. Navigating 24hr news updates and social media alerts, we are in the middle of a never-ending digital battle between fake news and scientific fact - where everyone has perspective and a story to share.

“As current opinions are increasingly pushed to opposing ends of the spectrum - right/ wrong, all/ nothing, open/ closed – we thought: what better way to explore the substance and science of our lives than by exploring its opposites?

“Perhaps the best way forward is to collide with each side of the argument and see where you land. In the spirit of inquiry and without agenda, the podcast will challenge and embrace opinions from across the board by bringing together experts to state the case from many sides.”

Ep 1 Feast or Famine: Sex Toys, Strip Clubs and Celibacy in Lockdown

With sex toy sales at an all-time high and porn sites offering their premium services free of charge during lockdown, self-pleasure has been a big part of lockdown self-care. Yet a recent survey by the Kinsey Institute found that 44% of people said their sex life had declined during the pandemic, and 30% said the same of their romantic life.

The team speaks to acclaimed Neuroscientist and Sex Therapist Dr Nan Wise, Sex Positive Educator Rukiat about elected celibacy, and Stacey Clare from the East London Strippers Collective (ELSC) about how the pandemic is shining a light on long term problems within the sex industry.
