The Awards have two entry classifications:

● Amateur Photographer (18+)

● Young Photographer (u18)

In both of the above classifications, there will be the following six entry categories:

● Best Selfie - sponsored by New Openings Rochester

A modern twist on the classic ‘portrait’ category. A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a digital camera or smartphone, which may be held in the hand or supported by a selfie stick. We will also accept traditional portrait entries in this category.

● Best Landscape Photography - sponsored by Rochester Cathedral

Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes.

● Architecture Photography - sponsored by MOXY Property Consultants

Architecture photography (also referred to as building photography or structure photography) generally means photography that focuses on buildings. It can include shooting building exteriors and interiors, as well as bridges, other structures and cityscapes.

● Night Photography

Night photography refers to the activity of capturing images outdoors at night, between dusk and dawn.

● Food Photography - sponsored by Chuck and Blade Burgers

Food photography is a still-life photography genre used to create attractive still-life photographs of food and/or drink.

● Action Photography - sponsored by Get Ready Comics

Action photography addresses the quest to capture and convey motion in pictures. Our world is constantly in motion, though some things move slower than others.

Judging the awards are 9 experts in their field, as follows:

● Steve Hartridge, Photographer

● Genevieve Tullberg, Gallery Manager at Nucleus Arts

● Chris Pickett, Photographer

● Lucy Horner, Partner at Francis Iles

● Noel Bodle, Photographer

● Lois Higgin, Bloggers

● Jason Tamou, Creator

● Cam Walker, Creator

● Philip Price de Pasquale, Creator

The judging panel will go through all of the entries, selecting a winner from both classifications in each category, giving us our twelve finalists.

The 12 photos will then be exhibited, this August in the Halpern Pop Gallery, situated above Café Nucleus, when the public will have a chance to see the photos.

Then public voting begins, whereby the 12 entries will go head-to-head in a bid to be crowned:

● Rochester Amateur Photographer of the Year (18+)

● Rochester Young Photographer of the year (u18)

Finally, the team behind the awards will be producing a 2022 Charity Calendar featuring the 12 photos, which will be available to purchase via their website and in selected shops across Rochester, with a % of proceeds going to support our charity partner Step and Learn who is a Medway based charity dedicated to assisting the physical and educational improvements of children with Cerebral Palsy and associated motor difficulties.

Shane Waterman , Marketing and Tourism Lead, Visit Rochester UK, said: “For nearly 200 years, photographers have been recording life in and around the city of Rochester. As a result, a substantial collection of images documenting the life and social history of one of Britain’s historic gems now exists, held in the Medway Archives over the bridge in Strood, and in private albums in homes all over the area and beyond.”
