Margate’s trendy new shopping precinct The Centre is now complete

The final two units have been filled by Palms Pizzeria and Curve Coffee Roaster

If you grew up in Margate, you won’t quite believe just how much The Centre (@thecentremargate) has changed.

Now a colourful, buzzing shopping precinct, bursting with independent businesses, it’s a far cry from the dingy afterthought it once was.

The area boasts a selection of shops and nightspots, from a record store and jazz club to a tequila and mezcal bar.

Among the traders are Elsewhere Music Venue (@elsewheremarg8), Mariachi (@mariachi_margate), Crybaby Jazz (@crybabymargate), Modern Provider Bakery (@modern_provider), Just 4 Kids Clothing, and Glitz and Gadgets (@glitz_and_gadgets).

There’s also UpMargate (@upmargate), a creative hub and indoor market, providing retail, pop-up and studio space for independent traders, designers, makers, artists and start-ups.

And now, the final two units at The Centre have been filled.

Palms Pizzeria (@palmspizzeria) is taking one, having agreed a five-year lease with LCP, which manages the shopping centre on behalf of landlord Evolve Estates.

Curve Coffee Roasters (@curveroasters) coffee shop has taken the other, also on a five-year lease.

Joshua Ward is opening Palms Pizzeria with business partner Stuart Clarke.

He said: “We are bringing a New York-style pizza-by-the-slice restaurant to Margate, which is something Stuart and I have wanted to do for a long time now.

“We think where we’re opening in The Centre is the perfect spot next to the music venues and bars.

“As well as a sit-in service, we will have a click and collect service and eventually delivery, too.”

There will be six varieties of pizza on offer and this will be extended over the next few months.

Phil Murphy, asset manager at Evolve Estates, says The Centre is thriving, attracting 65,000 shoppers a month.

“It is a haven for great independents, high street names and, of course, UpMargate,” he said.

“With confidence continuing to grow in the high street, we're really pleased to have let the final two units to local traders as they gear up for the busy summer trade.”
