REVIEW: Should I Visit Sub Rosa in Margate?

“The Margate breakfast scene has just added a whole new genre with the opening of Sub Rosa”

Should I visit Sub Rosa in Margate? Yes, yes you should.

When Dominic and his wife Jenny moved from the United States to his homeland, he asked what she would miss most about living in New York.

“She said bagels and bodega cats. Unfortunately, I’m allergic to cats, so we’re opening a bagel shop.”

The Margate breakfast scene has just added a whole new genre with the opening of Sub Rosa (@subrosamargate).

Based in King Street, the NYC-style bagel shop is bringing some classic flavours of the US, using cracking Kent produce.

With hand-rolled bagels, created fresh in-house, using regenerative flour from Wildfarmed, Sub Rosa is slinging sandwich-based beauties that grab attention.

The menu sees Thanet cress and wild rocket provided by Kentish Foragers, veggies from Nash Farm, cheese from Cheesemakers of Canterbury and P’tang Yang jam from Margate’s Jamface Jams and more.

On our visit we had The Fat Italian, with three Brooklyn-style Kentish cold cuts, pepperoni, coppa and peppercorn saucisson, topped with a fresh salad and pickle juice vinaigrette. Bellissimo.

We also took on the Lox, with alder-smoked salmon, cream cheese, fresh dill, cracked black pepper and a squirt of lemon. Fresh.

Of course they do a salt beef number with pickles and mustard, of course they offer regular specials (see the Caprese) with veggie and vegan options, just get down there FFS!

Just don’t shout ‘Hey! I’m eating here!’ in a New York accent. It’s not funny the second time.
