The Lido Stores Gallery’s third annual alternative Valentines exhibition features meditations on the complexities of love and lust.
‘Fierce Scandal’ contemplates the power of desire and the many ways it shapes our lives – from the blindsiding jolt of whirlwind romance to the consuming longing and stolen intimacy of affairs.
Gallery owner and curator Kristen Healy purposely keeps this open call’s submission window tight to encourage a fun and dynamic exhibition that reflects the myriad interpretations of the theme.
Historically, the Valentine’s shows have introduced exciting new artists to Margate and the 2024 edition is no exception, with more than 60 participating artists displaying paintings, prints, collage and drawings – many of whom are exhibiting in Margate for the first time. All works are available for sale and all are priced below £300.
The 2024 exhibition title, ‘Fierce Scandal’, derives from a direct quote from one of Kristen’s cousins, a stonemason based in County Clare, Ireland, commenting on her engagement after just six weeks. Historically, the phrase ‘fierce scandal’ referenced unexpected and shocking news within the community – think shotgun weddings, unplanned pregnancies out of wedlock, affairs and the like.
