RISKEE AND THE RIDICULE - BACKWORDS 2

Ashford grime-punk outfit Riskee And The Ridicule have returned with ‘Backwords 2’, which will be central to their new EP due in Spring 2021.

As we saw with previous singles - the brilliant Brexit bashing ‘Blue Jacket’ and ‘Young And Beautiful’ - the group once again demonstrates a keen eye for combining thrashing punk guitar, heavy drums and an impeccable use of language.

Centred around the spitting vocals of lead singer Scott Picking, the track is pacy, punchy and aggressive with spiking guitar distortion keeping the genre split between raw rap and emo punk.

Proudly irritated at the state of current times, these guys know how to cause a stir. Disquieting.

PIZZA WEASEL - TRAVELLING AT THE SPEED OF BOREDOM

It’s not often that you instantly strike up an instant affection for a musician; it’s usually more of a slow burn based on multiple plays. From the first words of ‘Bad Party’ - "Why is there meatloaf in the toilet?” - I was hooked.

Margate’s Pizza Weasel (Mike Cannon) has released debut album ‘Travelling At The Speed of Boredom’, which comprises part Californian lo-fi indie covered in flecks of early Weezer and part experimental psychedelic Doors house party.

Previously described as “flippant rock for nobody in particular”, there are the sombre soul searching tracks like ‘Memories’ and the grunge-cardigan-laced ‘Get Off My Lawn’. Really, there is something for everyone with an interest in every colour of the rock and roll rainbow. Encompassing.

ISSEY CROSS - BOYS MAKE PROMISES

Tunbridge Wells artist Issey Cross has burst onto the scene this year with a duo of colourful alt-pop bangers.

Eye catching in more ways than one, the singer has released her second single ‘Boys Make Promises’, which is packed with emotion, distinct vocals and compelling beats.

There is something very Eurythmics/Annie Lennox about the brazen creativity in the songs and the obvious individualistic take on how music should sound… and we dig it. Inventive.

KWES E - HAND ON HEART

Canterbury’s Kwes e, part of the Escape Plan group, has released ‘Hand on Heart’, a trap track brimming with feeling as he dialogues about a modern relationship.

Heavy on the beats and bass, but tempered with a relaxed melody, Kwes e creates a narrative with on-point lyrics that are effortlessly descriptive and relatable. Real.

KYANNA - TRUST THE PROCESS

Perhaps talking about her own experience of breaking into the music industry, Sandwich’s Kyanna Hayes has released ‘Trust the Process’.

Reflective, soulful and, at times, haunting, the track is completed with a skipping hip hop beat. Kyanna even drops the music for a vignette of contemplative thought midway through. Talent shines bright throughout.

She sings: “Looking backwards is sometimes the only way to look forwards..” And this track certainly feels like a precursor to something big. Pushing.
