Gulbenkian Autumn programme FT: Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Turin Brakes & Michael Gira

The arts centre continues its partnership with Folk in the Barn, also presenting Calan and vocalist Paul Young’s Los Pacaminos



Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Turin Brakes and Michael Gira some of the big names in Gulbenkian Arts Centre’s autumn programme  

The season, which kicked off in September with over 1,000 people enjoying the political voice of Pussy Riot, continues with a surprising mix that covers world music, including a stand out gig by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, classical, with Gulbenkian welcoming Joanna MacGregor, and folk including legend Shirley Collins. 

The arts centre continues its successful partnership with Folk in the Barn, presenting Turin Brakes, Calan and vocalist Paul Young’s Los Pacaminos. They are also joining together with local promoters Free Range who are celebrating their 10th Anniversary with two intriguing events in the Colyer-Fergusson Hall.

Valentin Clastrier (Hurdy Gurdy) & Evan Parker (Soprano Saxophone) 

Enjoy the talents of two master musicians as they come together for this very special event. ‘Living legend’ Valentin Clastrier is considered the inventor of the modern hurdy-gurdy which, in his hands, creates a magical and virtuoso universe.

John Woolrich & The Benyounes Quartet: In Darkness Let Me Dwell 

John Woolrich’s music – played live by the Benyounes Quartet – is coupled with specially created visual responses by international artists and filmmakers.

Turin Brakes 

Turin Brakes return for their sixth visit to Folk in the Barn, we love their melodic, dreamy-folky grooves. 2022 sees Turin Brakes release their ninth studio album – Wide-Eyed Nowhere. 

 

Tue 18 Oct, 8pm 

Ladysmith Black Mambazo + Muntu Valdo 

South African vocal powerhouse play their first UK tour for many years. Since they shot to global stardom on Paul Simon’s Graceland album, Mambazo have been recognised as one of the world’s great vocal groups. 

 

Wed 19 Oct, 8pm 

Bollywood Brass Band 

Bollywood Brass Band is the UK’s pioneering Indian-style brass band, playing the great tunes and compulsively danceable rhythms of Bollywood. 

 

Fri 21 Oct, 8pm 

Roger Eno 

Roger Eno’s discography spans over three decades and 25 albums of work, both solo and collaborative (involving John Cale and others) where minimal piano compositions evolve through chamber music, folk, the traditional and the neo-classical.

Beth Nielsen Chapman – CrazyTown 

Get ready to laugh and cry and, well, just fasten your seat belt. One thing you can count on is one great song after another and some fascinating stories woven between them.

Shirley Collins and the Lodestar Band 

Shirley cemented her role at the forefront of the 1960’s Folk Revival, recording over a dozen albums including the influential Folk Roots, New Routes with avant-garde guitarist Davy Graham, and No Roses.

The Brighton Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble with Joanna MacGregor 

Music Director Joanna MacGregor, violinist Ruth Rogers and Brighton Philharmonic’s star players come together in two richly-curated chamber programmes.

Los Pacaminos 

Placing themselves squarely in the Americana genre that is fast gaining popularity, Los Pacaminos must be the first Tex-Mex band to have formed in the UK.

Maggie Nicols & the Free Range Orchestra 

Maggie Nicols will lead the orchestra in a series of adventurous and playful group improvisations in this final concert of Free Range’s 10th anniversary year! 

 

Mon 21 Nov, 8pm 

Michael Gira (Swans) & Kristof Hahn 

Michael Gira founded the seminal NYC band SWANS in 1982. Quickly infamous for their punishing, brutal and repetitive onslaughts of sound, SWANS gradually transformed over 15 years through proto-industrial rock, to gentle acoustic-based songs.

Calan 

One of Britain’s most innovative and thrilling bands will showcase their critically acclaimed new album Kistvaen. Recorded just before the pandemic, live performances of the album were suspended… until now.

An Evening with Cowboy Junkies 

Unlike most long-lasting groups, Cowboy Junkies have never had a break up or taken a sanity-saving hiatus. There’s an appreciation of each other that keeps them constantly working. “It’s that intimacy and understanding of what each one of us brings to the table.”

Celebrating Sandy’s genius with new shine and brilliance, a Homage to the Life and Works of one of Britains best loved Folk Singers.

Albion Christmas Band 

Described in the Guardian as “the perfect antidote to the corporate Christmas”, expect an evening of traditional English Christmas music, humourous stories and beautiful, spine-tingling Christmas carols
