A former bus depot is to become a vibrant riverside destination with old shipping containers transformed into a cafe.

The Hub - the brainchild of cycling enthusiasts Matt Hayday, Keith Owen and Jez Smith - will be based at Churchfield Way in Wye on the old Poynters Coaches site by the River Stour.

Plans, drawn up by OSG Architecture, were submitted in April and have now been given the green light by Ashford Borough Council, paving the way for their vision to become a reality.

Setting out the venture, the trio say The Hub will be nestled at the foot of the North Downs and the Pilgrims Way and be a base for cyclists, walkers and passers-by.

Stocking high-quality local, fair-trade produce and great coffee, The Hub aims to be a vibrant and valuable asset to the community, creating jobs, and a place to meet friends, with plenty of outdoor space to accommodate children, dogs and bikes,” they said on the project’s website.

“We intend to make The Hub as environmentally friendly as possible.

“Our concept is to recycle redundant shipping containers that will be well insulated and naturally ventilated to considerably reduce the carbon footprint of the construction and running of the buildings.”

They also plan to add enhanced planting to the river bank and use shrubs and planters as green walls to soften views.

“We understand this will take a few seasons to develop but in time visitors can enjoy the local ecology along the river from the site,” the team said.
